Play Horde All rules

The rule

Black has an ordinary army. White has a wall of pawns and no king. Black must capture every last pawn; White only needs mate.

How it plays

1One side is a wall

White starts with 36 pawns and no king at all. Black starts with the ordinary army. Nothing else about the rules changes.

2Two different ways to win

White has no king, so Black can never give check or mate. Black wins only by capturing every last white pawn. White wins the ordinary way, by checkmating the black king.

3The exact rules

White fields 36 pawns and has no king. A white pawn may take its two-square step from the first rank as well as the second. Black wins by capturing every white piece; White wins by checkmating the black king. Stalemate is a draw, as in ordinary chess.
